At first, I thought it might be mold. Then I wondered if it could be insects. At one point, I even joked that it looked like something from a horror movie.
Thin, dark, hair-like strands were coming straight out of the tile joint, spreading across the surface in a way that looked strangely alive. The longer we stared at it, the more unsettling it became. The bathroom had been completely clean when we left, so finding this strange growth after only 10 days made the whole situation even more confusing.
At first, we did not want to touch it. We just stood there trying to understand what could possibly grow like that indoors. It looked too thin to be ordinary dirt, too strange to ignore, and too unexpected to make sense right away.
After some research — and a lot of overthinking — we finally discovered the answer.
It was actually plant roots.
Yes, real roots.
They most likely came from a tree or plant outside the house, or possibly from vegetation growing underneath or near the building. Somehow, the roots found a tiny crack or opening and began pushing their way through the tile joint. Because bathrooms often hold moisture, the area may have attracted the roots as they searched for water.

Those thin, hair-like strands are known as feeder roots. Their job is to search for water and nutrients, which explains why they were drawn toward the damp bathroom area. While it may look creepy at first, it is a completely natural process.
Still, it is definitely not something anyone expects to see inside a bathroom.
What made it so surprising was how quickly it appeared. After only 10 days away, the bathroom went from clean and normal to looking like something strange had started growing out of the floor. Without knowing the explanation, it was easy to imagine the worst.

In the end, the strange growth was not mold, insects, or anything dangerous from a horror movie. It was simply nature finding a way through a tiny opening in search of moisture.
Completely natural — but still very unexpected.
Safe to say, it was definitely not the welcome-home surprise we were hoping for.
What would you have thought it was?
