Hollywood is deeply mourning the loss of the beloved actor Michael Pennington, who has passed away at the age of 82. His representatives have officially confirmed his death, prompting a massive outpouring of heartfelt tributes from around the world.
To moviegoers everywhere, the distinguished British star was best recognized for his portrayal of the Imperial officer Moff Jerjerrod—the commander tasked with overseeing the construction of the second Death Star—in the legendary sci-fi epic, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.
Born on June 7, 1943, in Cambridge, England, Pennington evolved into one of Great Britain’s most revered Shakespearean performers. He devoted decades of his life to literature and the stage, most notably co-founding the English Shakespeare Company alongside director Michael Bogdanov in 1986.
Following the confirmation of his passing on Sunday, condolences rapidly began flooding in from devoted fans and fellow actors alike. Actress Miriam Margolyes paid a touching tribute to Pennington, honoring him as a “very fine actor, brilliant, wise, clear.”
Speaking to the BBC, she reflected on their shared history, noting he was “an old friend, from Cambridge [University] days.” She emotionally added: “I am sad beyond measure. Bless your dear memory, old chum.”
While millions recognized his face from the iconic Star Wars franchise, Pennington boasted an incredibly long and decorated career across both the stage and the silver screen. His cinematic portfolio includes notable films such as Hamlet and The Iron Lady, where he delivered a memorable performance as British politician Michael Foot.
The esteemed English actor was also celebrated for his frequent collaborations with Dame Judi Dench and her husband, Michael Williams. The trio famously shared the stage in several theatrical productions, including an acclaimed run of King Lear.

Years ago, Michael Pennington disclosed that watching Dench perform as Ophelia in a 1957 production of Hamlet was the exact catalyst that inspired him to pursue a career in the theater.
“There’s no one quite like Judi. For her, acting is playing: she’s a lass unparalleled,” the actor affectionately stated.
Despite the monumental, worldwide fame he garnered from Star Wars, Pennington once confessed he was genuinely astonished by the enduring attention the role brought him over the decades. In a previous interview, he looked back on how enthusiastic fans would consistently approach him at the stage door following his theater performances, always eager to ask him questions about the sci-fi classic.
His final credited on-screen role occurred in 2022, when he provided the voice for The Trust across five episodes of the science fiction series Raised by Wolves. He is survived by his son, Mark.
Rest in peace, Michael Pennington.
